The island of the wild beaches and colorful city mindelo
Welcome to São Vicente, the norther capeverdean island, which is also known as the island of the wind. It is also the island of the famous barfoot singer Cesaria Evora († 17. December 2011 ), who brought the capeverdean music Morna to the world. The island is 227 km big and around 80% of its habitants live in Mindelo. São Vicente is mostly known for its famous city Mindelo, the secret capital of Cape Verde. The international airport offers good flight connections to Europe and the international harbour is considered one of the most beautiful harbours of the world. The city beach Laginha is famous for its surreal turquoise water, where not only tourists meet but mostly locals. Specially on sundays when the families and friends come together. On clear days you will have a good view to the neighbour island Santo Antão.
The lively city Mindelo is where many different cultures come together, mostly from Africa and Europe. Most of the sailors on their way to the carribean stop in Mindelo, so you will meet people from all over the world. Old and colorful colonial houses, with charming restaurants and bars give Mindelo a special character. During the whole year you will find festivals, concerts, carneval and other events. Some say: if you haven´t seen Mindelo, you haven´t been to Cape Verde. Here you will find the african joy of life!
But São Vicente offers more then only one of the must beautiful cities in Africa. Take your time to discover the windy island: you will be fascinated. Once you drive out of Mindelo you will find yourself on lonely beaches, swimming with turtles or hiking around the highest and greenest mountain of São Vicente, the Monte Verde.
